Weaving Beside You: From Papermaking to Grass Weaving
Suho’s Paper Installation and Lin San-yuan’s Grass Art
2 0 2 1 .07. 20 (Fri) ~ 2 0 2 1 . 11 . 27 (Sat)
Plants have been around on earth for thousands of years, nurturing other creatures while cultivating human civilisations. The various use of plants, such as papermaking, grass weaving, bamboo weaving, knitting, dying, and gardening, demonstrate local arts spirits and the soil and climate conditions, archiving the regional flora and eco-friendly practices of different periods. The collection of raw materials, the evolution of craftsmanship, and the representation of personal characters and aesthetics have been interwoven together to depict a series of exciting fibre stories.
Grass weaving used to be a technique and memory shared by Taiwanese citizens. Women collected a reasonable amount of seasonal plants to weave baskets and clothes for increasing family income when they didn’t have to work in farms. Due to the material shortage in the 50s and 60s, people didn’t have spare money to buy their children toys, so they also utilised whatever materials that were handy to them to craft a variety of toys for their children.
Taiwanese grass weaving artist Lin San-yuan (also known as Mike Lin) inherits the skills of “crafting toys with grass” from his mother. Having been active in the electronics industry for more than 35 years, Lin decided to return to the humble beginning and explore the memories he shared with his mother. “Trying out all kinds of plants” in urban and rural areas, he crafts numerous animals with these plants to attract childlike souls in society.
This special exhibition brings together Suho’s and Taiwanese grass weaving artist Lin San-yuan’s works. With the use of their mutual language of nature, they tell Taiwanese’ stories, depict local climate and topography, and pass down their affection for the land. In this exhibition, Suho presents natural scenes accommodating Lin’s grass-woven animal toys with paper and creativity, aiming to invite adults and children to come and enjoy the exhibition while composing a love song for nature with their laughter and smile. Follow the music and come along with us. Pick up a piece of grass and hold your children in hands.
Let’s get back our innate creativity in the exhibition.
